Huldah
We don’t often speak of Huldah, but she was a powerful prophet in one of the most dreadful times of the people of Israel’s history. As the country was being torn apart from outside as well as from within, she spoke about how our selfish actions have consequences - because God loves justice.
At a key point in her ministry the King of Judah reaches out to her because he realizes that he’s made a mess of his spiritual journey. Huldah points out to him that his willingness to ask for guidance and help is the very thing that guarantees that his journey will be one of blessing. She speaks to the king’s messengers this way:
Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken… - 2 Kings 2:22:18-19
She lets Josiah the king know that God sees his heart and that he will avoid a lot of the painful consequences that are befalling the people. All because his heart was soft - it was open, teachable, and humble.
Is there a ‘prophet’ in your life who is good at seeing your heart - maybe a mentor or a parent or a friend? Can you ask them what they see going on in your heart these days? It may be helpful to get their wise and discerning perspective.
