Jesus Is the Pearl of Great Price

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. - Matthew 13:45-46

Jesus is worth everything, isn’t he? As he said elsewhere, what would it gain you if you got the whole world but lost your very soul? But if you get Jesus, you get it all. As Paul would write in Romans, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

But what might it cost? That’s the big question. To find Christ, know Christ, and love Christ - there’s a commitment involved. There’s a call. And it means surrendering some things. It means “selling everything” according to the parable. It seems that ‘everything’ might not just be your money and your time, but also your shame and your insecurities. ‘Everything’ might not just be your dreams, but your nightmares; not just your strengths, but your weaknesses, not just your hatred of others, but your hatred of yourself. But to find love, true love, wouldn’t it be worth it?

What holds you back today from diving in more deeply with Jesus? Can you hear his kind and generous invitation to surrender, not to cause you loss but to cause you gain? Talk with Jesus about what all this stirs up for you.
