Joining Him at the Table

You prepare a table before me. - Psalm 23

The first half of Psalm 23 paints God as the Good Shepherd. The second half as the Good Host. Each have different attributes and emphases (guiding and protecting vs. celebrating and blessing, for example).

When you think of a really good host, what comes to mind? Perhaps a warm welcome at the door or remembering your food preferences? Perhaps cooking tons of food or asking the most interesting questions? Perhaps the encouraging laughter or the sympathetic listening?

Take some time today to exercise your holy imagination, allowing Jesus to welcome you to his table. Take a few deep breaths and invite the Spirit to lead you as you meditate and envision what it would be like to sit with him - what do you experience there? What are the smells, the sounds, the tastes? What gets said and gets left unsaid?
