Praying for Daily Bread
This week we’re reflecting on that simple, but very difficult prayer: “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). One thing that really encourages me as I pray it is that Jesus knew what he was asking of us.
Jesus himself faced plenty of need. He relied on his friends for financial support (See Luke 8:1-3) and there were plenty of times when he had “no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20). And he was hungry.
Take a moment to reflect on what it meant for Jesus to have to trust God’s provision even in this super intense season of being tempted to take control back into his own hands:
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” - Matthew 4:1-4
What are the situations where you’re tempted to take control back into your own hands? Pray the prayer Jesus taught us, knowing that he understands right where you struggle to trust for God’s provision.
