Not Going Alone

Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of people. - Jesus in Mark 1:17

Jesus has a vision of where he’s going, but he’s committed to not going alone. He calls others to join him. Even on the last night of his life, he invited his friends to spend time with him and to pray with him.

One of the tricky things on this journey of faith is finding others who will go on the journey with you. A wise old soul who mentored Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote this:

There are two questions we must ask ourselves. The first is “Where am I going?” and the the second is “Who will go with me?” If you ever get those questions in the wrong order, you are in trouble. - Howard Thurman

Each of us are looking for some community. It’s not easy to find, so we can be tempted to find it in places that are unhealthy. And yet, ultimately, when we share a vision with others, that forms the strongest foundation for friendship.

Consider praying this prayer today:

Jesus, I want to follow you. And I really want to follow you with some others. Help me to find my people - the ones who will help me grow, who will stand by me in trials, and whom I can support and love as well. Help me to see who I’m not seeing right now. Grant me the courage to reach out. Amen.
