Rest (on a Monday?)

The scriptural teaching about work is that it is holy and honorable. And yet when we devote ourselves too much to work, when we expend too much of our energy there, we find ourselves burning out. Sometimes the ways we rest don’t help either. We turn to distraction instead of quiet or entertainment instead of recreation.

Instead of resting from our work, God invites us into a different rhythm - where we work from our rest. Like a pendulum swinging back and forth, the rhythm is healthy, especially when we are grounded in our connection with God and with our true selves.

The scripture we looked at yesterday sums this up so neatly:

returning and rest you shall be saved.
In quietness and trust shall be your strength.
- Isaiah 30:15

Take a moment this Monday to assess how you are doing at the balance between work and rest. Did your weekend leave you feeling directed and motivated for your week? Or is there a sense of dread already seeping in - or perhaps is there regret about how unrestful your weekend was? Would it be helpful to find a few moments tonight to do something truly restful (and if so, what would that be)?
