Sowing and Reaping
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A person reaps what they sow. - Galatians 6:7
Part of fruitfulness is putting in the effort of faithfulness when no one else is around. That’s what Paul is talking about with the image of sowing in Galatians 6. It matters a lot what you do when there’s no fruitfulness - when it’s time to prepare the fields and plant the crops and water them. Fruitfulness will come - but you won’t see it on that day.
There are three key things about reaping and sowing: You reap the same kind of thing that you sow. You also reap a lot later than you sow. And, finally, you reap a lot more.
In Galatians 6, Paul goes on to write about how personal destruction or personal flourishing are the results of how we invest our lives. Will we hold on to a vision of God’s goodness, power, and love - and therefore work for justice, forgive our enemies, and learn how to love others? If so, then these are the seeds of the Spirit that will produce life in us and health in the world.
Can you name a few places in your life where you are in a season of sowing?
As you reflect, are there some ways that you see yourself reaping the things you’ve sown?
Talk with Jesus about these and what it means to follow him today.
