Wake Up!
Wake up, Sleeper, and rise from the dead - and Christ will shine on you. - Ephesians 5:14
These are the words that precede Paul writing that we should make the most of every kairos (which we looked at yesterday). It seems that a key part of making the most of what God is up to in our lives is to wake up to what God is up to in our lives! It’s hard to see God at work when we’re not looking.
There may be two sides of the coin of paying attention that are worth thinking about here. The first is that it’s how we become aware of God working in our lives. The second is that it becomes a form of worship.
As the 20th century mystic wrote, “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity” (Simone Weil). If we are purely and generously attentive to God, isn’t that worship?
Look back over a season of time, whether it’s an hour or a day or a week or a summer or a year or a decade and pay close attention. Is there a moment that stands out or perhaps a theme you are noticing? Where do you see God’s fingerprints that you might not have noticed before?
