We Are Supposed to Question God
The priests did not ask, “Where is Yahweh?” - Jeremiah 2:8
God speaks these words through Jeremiah to chastise those who are supposed to be spiritually mature - they would not let themselves ask “Where is God?” Instead, they were content with their life as it was, unwilling to allow some healthy doubt to destabilize their comfortable status quo.
One of the problems of not asking the hard questions is that we miss what God is up to. We protect ourselves from insecurity and uncertainty by glossing over our doubt, but Jesus actually wants us to be curious, even frustrated, enough to wonder where in the world God is.
Today, think about the situations in the world that cause you despair or about the aspects of your character that are underdeveloped or about a relationship that just doesn’t seem to work - and ask yourself (in anger if necessary!), “Where is God?”
