When the Election Does Not Go Your way

The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply. - 1 Timothy 2:1-2 The Message

Liz Roy made two insightful comments yesterday during the panel conversation about how she’d handle it if the elections don’t go her way. The first is this: whoever wins, she’s taking her AA principle of doing a “ruthless self evaluation” of all her political resentments and fears. She’ll list each one and then reflect on where that fear or resentment comes from - and then she’ll spend time reflecting on how she might be feeding those fears or in any way giving them power over herself.

Secondly, she said she would commit to praying earnestly for those in power, and particularly for her political ‘enemies’ in the same way that she prays for herself - that they would experience and show compassion, that they would increase in their capacity to do what is right and to serve the common good.

Does one or both of those commitments sound like something the Spirit might be inviting you into this season?
