When We Mourn
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. - Matthew 5:4
Jesus tackles our pain head on. He doesn’t pretend it’s not there. He doesn’t think the world is the way it should be. He knows about the injustice, the suffering, the loss.
In fact, that’s why he came. He came to be one of us, and that means he really understands. In Hebrews 2:6 it says, “Since God’s children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity.”
So, Jesus fully understood our humanity when he stood up to preach the Sermon on the Mount. That means that when Jesus blessed those of us in mourning these days, he wasn’t just saying that ‘one day you’ll be comforted.’ It’s much more the case that even know, there is comfort. That’s because “In Christ, we don’t have to avoid our pain, because God promises to meet us in it” (Rich Villodas).
Christ is here in the pain and mess of this world. We don’t have to try to escape the pain - because Jesus is with us in it. Thank your God for being here with you.
