Prayer for Peace in Political Storm
Today we’re going to spend a moment reading and rereading a prayer from the book of Psalms. In it, you get the sense that the author may have been speaking to themself about how anxiety-provoking politics can be! So in this season of talking about politics, it might be helpful to have some practical resources to help on the journey.
These verses come in two clumps, and are clearly connected. The first clump is about not being anxious. The second clump is about those who enjoy favor - and favor in a practical, worldly sense (inheriting the land). Read through these verses slowly once and pay attention to what stands out. Then read through slowly again and see if you can turn it into a prayer. Take a couple of deep breaths before you begin.
Do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
When they carry out their wicked schemes, refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
Do not fret: it leads only to evil, and evil will be cut off.
But those who hope in Yahweh will inherit the land.
A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look for them, they will not be found.
But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace.
- Psalm 37:8-11
